In 1984, the RCHS published a book on the Llanfihangel, Grosmont, and Hereford Railways that were built between 1814 and 1829, and together provided a route from the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal at Govilon to the Wye Bridge in Hereford. The authors were Ray Cook and Charles Clinker who, unfortunately, died just a few days before the manuscript was finalised. Gordon Rattenbury also assisted with reviewing the text before it went to print. The book contains maps and drawings that exemplify Ray's superb draughtsmanship, and a selection of photographs of the route taken by Ray, Gordon, Bertram Baxter, and Issy Cohen (all early members of the Society) from the 1940's to the 1970's. A lot of what they recorded has since been swept away, so the Online Archive is now publishing over 80 drawings and photos that provide a trip along what remained of the line from south to north.
In 1846, all three railways were sold to the Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Railway and converted into a modern main line, with much straightening out of the earlier route and, therefore, abandoned sections of the earlier railways waiting to be explored.
