The album has now been enhanced by the addition of a large collection of images from the Tony Broome Collection, edited and uploaded by Tony Humphries, and now comprises over 600 images of various vintages, including steam engines at work on the challenging line.

A few hours ago, the 20,000th image was uploaded. Well done to all contributors.

An album of photos of the canal is now online. They were taken, principally, by our late members Kenneth Gardiner, Ray Cook, Dennis Hadley, Stanley Holland, and Philip & Rodney Weaver. The maps were drawn by Richard Dean and H. Barnes.

Courtesy of the photographs of Hugh Compton, Dennis Hadley and others, you can now take a visual tour along the Grand Union from Birmingham to Brentford. The albums still need some tidying, and the captions enhancing. Help, please!

Hugh Compton's photographs of the canal have now been uploaded, included a number of the "Countess Wear", Exeter City Council's "sludge boat", plying its dubious route back from another happy day out in the estuary. Life was different then!

The photographs of the canal in earlier times have been reorganised into line-of-route order, and a few new ones added from the recent Society weekend based in Gloucester.

There are growing numbers of Grand Union Canal images in the Online Media Archive, including a comprehensive set taken by our late member, Hugh Compton, in the 1970s and 1980s on the Regent's Canal. This was at a time when the canal was unloved, and the collection includes both the 1974 boat rally at City Road Basin, and the Queen Mother's visit to Little Venice in 1975, both of which played their part in its revival.

Over fifty photographs, mainly in colour, showing the Ashby Canal between the 1960s and 1980s, are now online. They come from the Collections of Edwin Shearing and Hugh Compton, both early members of the RCHS. For some reason, and possibly a lost roll of film, there is a gap between Bridges 9 and 35 that I'm hoping someone can fill. Any additions or amendments to the captions would also be appreciated.

In 1984, the RCHS published a book on the Llanfihangel, Grosmont, and Hereford Railways that were built between 1814 and 1829, and together provided a route from the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal at Govilon to the Wye Bridge in Hereford. The authors were Ray Cook and Charles Clinker who, unfortunately, died just a few days before the manuscript was finalised.
