Blisworth Tunnel ventilation shaft. May 1967
Grid Ref: SP 7306 5252 [GU-100-960]. This is the first of the vent shafts heading south, 410m from the tunnel portal. At this point, the tunnel is only about 15m below the surface hence the need for the 'chimney' to ensure sufficient draft to remove the fumes. Other shafts are lower, only high enough to ensure that no people or animals fall down them. Initially, there were no effective vent shafts in the tunnel but after a fatal accident in 1861 involving two steamers, seven of the construction shafts were opened up to ensure the escape of fumes.Blisworth Tunnel ventilation shaft.
