The early passenger carriages had no heating system so water-filled foot warmers were introduced towards the end of the century. These were stored and refilled in a small foot-warmer house at Braintree station. Footwarmers ceased to be provided when the trains were fitted with steam heating. Wagon damaged in collision, and abandoned. Note the L-shaped rails and the short sleepers allowing clear space between the rails for the horses. Little Eaton signalbox on the Midland Railway Ripley Branch is in the background.
