R1 Class 0-6-0 (Ref: 010203)

The 13 R1 Class locomotives were rebuilt by Wainwright between 1888 and 1898 from the original SER R class locomotives. This unidentified example was pictured in 1948 presumably awaiting its new BR identity.

S14 Class 0-4-0T No. 147 (Ref: 010162)

No 147 was built in 1905 to work push-pull services as pictured here. It was ineffective in this role and was transferred to the War Department.
The train stands on the long-vanished Christchurch - Ringwood branch line in front of what started life as Christchurch (Hants, later Dorset) first railway station. A branch from the so-called "Castleman's Corkscrew" was built by the Ringwood, Christchurch & Bournemouth Railway, initially opening as a terminus at Christchurch in 1862. The first station was replaced with a larger two-platform structure when the Bournemouth Direct Railway opened a new, shorter route between Brockenhurst and Christchurch in 1886. By the time of the picture, W.S. Moorsom's old station had become the Station Master's house. The Ringwood-Christchurch line closed in 1935, though the Station Master's house continued in use until the early 1960s, by which time neglect had rendered it unfit for habitation. Demolition came ca.1969.

S15 Class 4-6-0 No. 838 (Ref: 010191)

Built by R.E.L Maunsell at Ashford Works in 1927 for working express goods services in the West of England. In later life later they were relegated to mixed traffic duties.

Schools Class 4-4-0 No. 917 "Ardingley" (Ref: 010231)

Schools Class 4-4-0 V Class. Built by Mr R E L Maunsell at Eastleigh Works in 1930. In 1946 these locomotives were the most powerful 4-4-0 wheel arrangement engines running in the country. They are known as Schools class and each one bears the name of a famous school. They can be seen operating on the main line services from London to Dover, Weymouth and Hastings. The tender has a capacity of 4000 gallons of water and 5 tons of coal.

Designed by Richard Maunsell and built at Eastleigh in 1934. Repton was withdrawn in 1962 but was restored at Eastleigh by 1966 and is currently (2023) operational on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

One of the T14 class of engines built by Mr. R.E.L. Maunsell in 1911 to work express services on the Waterloo - Salisbury run. Later they were used for working local services on the Western Section of the Southern Region. This class of locomotives are sometimes known as "Paddle boxes"

Tartar Class 2-2-2WT "Tartar" (Ref: 010282)

Designed by Beattie and built by Sharp Roberts in May 1852. Scrapped in April 1873. Note the young boys apparently in uniform.

U1 Class 4-6-0 No. 1908 (Ref: 010193)

Built by Richard Maunsell in 1931 to operate on the Central and eastern sectors of the SR.

W Class 2-6-4T No. 1911 (Ref: 010197)

Stationed in the London area these powerful goods tank engines were used chiefly on the transfer of goods trains between Marshalling Yard of the Southern Region and Northern lines. They had a water capacity of 2000 gallons and 31/2 tons of coal.
