Ray Cook was one of the Society's founders, probably the youngest at the time of its founding in 1954. He authored a number of books that were published by the Society, some jointly with such eminent transport historians as Clinker, Rattenbury, and Hoole. One of these was his "Lancashire & Yorkshire Historical Maps", first published in 1975, with a revised edition in 1976, and this was followed by a similar book covering the Great North of Scotland, and Highland, Railways in 1977.
