Bromley South 1899 (ELR - VIR @ 10m 71ch) (Ref: 030058)

Opened by the LC&DR in 1858 as Bromley. Renamed Bromley South in 1899 after the photograph was taken. The sign on top of the building being constructed in the background reads:"John Knowles & Co Bromley Depot.

Ivy Bridge, just south of Bromley South (VIR @ 11mp approx). LCDR Loco on Passenger train (Ref: 010104)

The bridge now carries Murray Avenue, but was an occupation bridge when the photo was taken. It was the scene of an accident in November 1882 when part of the parapet fell down, and shortly afterwards the whole bridge collapsed killing 8 workmen who were attempting to make it safe. The loco may be No 26, a “Tiger” class 2-4-0.

The station was opened in 1862 as Sevenoaks Junction and renamed in 1871. It was closed in 1939 when the station was repositioned further west. This view is looking east. The water tower which once served the station's four water columns is still in situ.

Margate Station 1926 (VIR @ 73m 69ch) (Ref: 030268)

This station was built in 1926 to replace the LCDR's Margate West station and incorporate the SER's Margate Sands. It is pictured here when the building work was completed, the wooden pattern used to construct the arched windows stands on the ground at the front of the building. The building is Grade II listed.

The Southern Railway station opened in 1926 on a new alignment to replace the earlier Ramsgate stations. Ramsgate railway station was built between 1924 and 1926, and thought to have been designed by James Robb Scott and Edwin Maxwell Fry. Margate station and the demolished Dumpton Park station are of a similar design. The building is Grade II listed

Holborn Viaduct (HHH @ 0m 00ch)

An early view (estimated date circa 1880) of the interior of Holborn Viaduct station. All of the stock is identified as built in the 1860s or early 70s. The time by the clock on the far wall is 4.45 pm (the light is from the West) and as the station is empty, it presumably is Sunday. Note the 24in globe gas lamp and the unusual double-sided wooden benches.
