The main line towards the river continues along the main road past the motor vehicle seen in the distance. Pill is a tidal inlet, in this case on the west bank of the River Usk. The original gauge was 4ft 2ins, later increased to 4ft 4ins.

Seen when in British Rail ownership, a busy dock railway with four tracks. Shortly after 1802 the MCC built a tramway from Nine Mile Point, west of Risca to Newport.

Bertram Baxter also stated “It was approximately at this point that the old “Rumney” Railway or tramroad branched off to the left behind the signal box”. However, Gordon Rattenbury’s opinion was that the route of the tramroad ran to the right of the building on the right, the line in the centre being being the “Old Rumney” Railway.

The buildings on the right-hand side were probably stables for the tramroad horses. The line was double track throughout.

This viaduct was 300 yards in length and was demolished in 1900. In the background of the 1952 picture is Risca station.

A 32 arch masonry viaduct built in 1805 to carry a branch of the Monmouthshire Canal Company's tramroad across the Ebbw Valley flood plain. It was constructed from red pennant sandstone by John Hodgkinson, passing the Union Copper Company buildings at left. It was made redundant following the opening of the Sirhowy Railway and demolished in 1902. Coloured aquatint after a drawing by Edward Pugh of Ruthin (1763-1813).

Long Bridge was a 32 arch masonry viaduct built in 1805 to carry a branch of the Monmouthshire Canal Company's tramroad across the Ebbw Valley flood plain. It was constructed from red pennant sandstone by John Hodgkinson. It was made redundant following the opening of the Sirhowy railway. In the photo, the line on the right is the present course; the original tramroad diverged to the left over the derelict viaduct seen in course of demolition. At its far end the viaduct spanned the Ebbw River. Making a sharp right turn after leaving the viaduct, the railway passed between the whitewashed buildings seen in the photograph to re-join the present course in the right background.

The Long Bridge incurred costs of £40,000 to build in 1805. The embankment beyond carries the GWR Nine Mile Point branch across the valley.

Baxter said that the view was looking south from the bridge over the railway, but Gordon Rattenbury said it was facing north at Map Ref, 1502 0730

Gordon Rattenbury disagrees with this analysis. In which case this view is only of the rear of Sirhowy goods depot.
