The FOREST OF DEAN (or Bullo Pill) Railway, commenced on the River Severn at Bullo Pill, and ran in a westerly direction passing through a tunnel under Haie Hill. This tunnel, 1100 yards in length, was of considerable length for the period of its construction, and employed a primitive system of staff working to prevent the risk of two trains of waggons meeting in the tunnel. The "staff" was a tree branch which was carried through the tunnel by the driver. At Upper Soudley, beyond the tunnel, the tramroad continued northwards through Cinderford to its termination at Churchway Engine (6¾m from Bullo Pill) where it made an “end-on" connection with a Branch of the Severn & Wye Railway from Miry Stock. With the exception of a realignment at Lower Soudley, the route of the tramroad was absorbed into the Great Western Railway as far as Cinderford Station, but beyond this point the route remained undisturbed.
