The bodies were of rolled plate iron and held about 45cwt of stone. They were secured to the wagon by means of two wooden pegs at the sides of the body, one of which may be seen in the photo. They were semi-open at one end, the material being kept in by means of a movable gate the purpose of which was to enable the contents of the wagon to be tipped into the waiting barges by means of the wagon tipplerPeak Forest Tramway. There were two of these in use. The machine could travel along rails laid on the jetty, inside of which were the tram rails carrying the loaded waggons. A chain was fixed to the solid end of the waggon body and passed around the centre spindle of the tippler. The gate and side pegs of the waggon having been removed, the large wheel was rotated so that the chain wound itself round the centre spindle. Bertram Baxter wrote “At the time of my visit to this district in September 1928, a piled up heap of old metal waggon bodies were awaiting disposal as scrap metal. In the foreground can be seen a high sided waggon of a different type. This view gives a good idea of the track ‘in situ’ As will be seen, the stone blocks were rough hewn, the only trimming being on the top face which was necessary to get a level base on which to bed down the chairs. To enable limestone to be tipped into kilns situated at the canal wharf, a branch line was constructed which, leaving the main route some distance back, climbed uphill so as to get to the top level of the kilns. Skirting the northern slopes of Eccles Pike, the tramway passes under the LMSR viaducts at Chapel Milton.
