Built in 1924 for the Southern Railway at Ashford Works to the design of R E L Maunsell, its total weight in working order is 1061/2 tons. This type of locomotive is to be found all over the Southern Region system at the end of the 1940s doing a considerable amount of passenger work in the West of England and also on the Oxted line of the Central Section. One of these locomotives was exhibited at the Wembley Exhibition in 1925.,br. Note the "Southern" tender in this 1949 photograph.
