The navigable section of the River Avon Navigation starts at Alveston, 2 miles upstream of Stratford-upon-Avon, and enters the River Severn at Tewkesbury. There have been unsuccessful plans over the years to extend the navigable section further upstream, to Warwick or Leamington Spa, where it would join the Warwick & Birmingham (Grand Union) Canal.
The Avon Navigation comprises the Upper Navigation (17½m), and Lower Navigation (28¼m) sections, the boundary between the two being at Evesham Lock.
