Turf Lock. “Countess Wear”, Exeter’s sludge boat, leaving the lock after discharging her load at sea. 1980
The MV “Countess Wear”, renamed from MV “SW2” in 1974, was Exeter’s sludge boat. In the early 1960s, the city council, which was responsible for the sewage works, decided to have a ‘waste disposal vessel’ built. Bolson and Son of Poole built the ship, which was launched in 1963. Dumping sludge at sea was banned after European legislation because of the pollution of beaches and waterways, and her last trip to dump waste at sea was on 31 December 1998.
