As originally built, the Chester Canal had a five-lock staircase. When the Wirral Section of the Ellesmere Canal was constructed, the bottom two locks of the staircase were closed, and the canal diverted. At the same time, the new Dee Branch was made to join the Wirral Section, the entrance lock from the Dee being retained.
