This section includes Loops Made Redundant by 1834 Shortening, including the nearly mile long piece of canal between the current junction with the Coventry at Hawkesbury and the original one at Longford where the two waterways ran for nearly a mile a few yards apart due to the Coventry wanting trade to travel as far along their line as possible before entering the Oxford. There is also a branch to the old Wyken colliery and a now filled in loop of canal bypassed in the 1834 shortening that led to other branches to the new Wyken collieries. The branch to Wyken old colliery is still used by Coventry Canal Cruising Club.

Hawkesbury Junction Stop Lock.
Installed because the two canals were at about 15cm different heightsbbut also ensured that the Coventry Canal gave away none of their water to the Oxford but did receive some from every boat movement. Grid Ref: SP 3622 8458 [OX-001-100] {OX-001-002}Hawkesbury Junction Stop Lock.

Dennis Hadley recorded the date of the map as 1776, but it is probably shortly after the passing of the Tithe Act 1836. Copy taken 1975. Section to the east of the former power station. Grid Ref: SP 364 843 [OX-001-800]Hawkesbury, Tithe map. Circa 1840
Waterway Recovery Group. 1.5.1. “Stanton” and “Belmont” heading south near Hawkesbury.
These were the Blue Line's last regular commercial narrowboats trading on Grand Union. It appears to be near Tusses Bridge (No.4), but that would require the picture to postdate 1990 as otherwise, Coventry Power Station would be in the background. Alexandra Colliery Basin, c1969.
Alexandra Colliery (also referred to as Wyken New Colliery), off Deedmore Road, Coventry, looking north from the end of the arm.A reviewer remembers it in the 1950's as a young boy who spent hours fishing there. The houses shown on the photos were not yet built and look like those in Orion Crescent, and the three chimneys in the far background on the left are those of Coventry Power Station.
