The building stood at the head of the Old Wharf on the east side of what is now known as Gas street Basin. It had an octagonal central building with wings either side, with gated entrances. Huge ornamental globes holding gas lamps are in the traffic island in front of the building and at the end of Paradise Street (which is mainly behind the photographer). Looking from the Worcester & Birmingham Canal to the original Birmingham Canal, later part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, where a physical bar prevented boats passing between the two navigations until 1815 when a stop lock was built.
